Steps to Becoming a Lawyer in Malaysia

  1. Initially, you need to enroll in an approved pre-university course. Students need at least Credits in English and Math following SPM, IGCSE, or UEC. The best options for students pursuing a legal degree in Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom are IB, Recognized Foundation, STPM, and A-Levels.
  2. Graduate with a law degree from an accredited institution. Make sure the LL. B course is an honors degree accepted by the Malaysia Bar or the Legal Profession Qualifying Board before enrolling in a university. You will not be eligible to apply to sit the Malaysian Bar examinations if you have not completed a recognized program.
  3. Complete a Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP) or Bar Vocational Course (BVC). Great Britain offers the BVC.
  4. Participate in “chambering.” This is a nine-month practical training program where the recent graduate is affiliated with a lawyer, law office, government agency, or other initiatives to learn real-world legal skills. Even though it is an unpaid position, most legal companies will offer a basic monthly allowance, ranging from RM 300 to RM 1,000, depending on the company’s size. You must complete all Malaysian Bar exams and legal aid courses throughout the training phase. The graduate will only be able to practice independently and be called to the Bar after completing these requirements.\
